PicoSure FOCUS™ Lens Array
Melasma is a common skin condition affecting women during their childbearing years. The condition causes dark spots most commonly found on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Though the exact cause is unknown, there is usually a genetic predisposition for melasma, and then a trigger such as sun exposure, hormones (pregnancy or hormone therapy), and even heat that may worsen the condition.
Because the causes of melasma are not clear, we do not have a cure. However, there are treatments that should improve melasma. The latest treatment for pigmentation uses the PicoSure FOCUS™ Lens Array laser to target brown spots through a “photoacoustic” process similar to tattoo removal. The PicoSure FOCUS™ Lens Array can also provide overall skin rejuvenation in texture, pores, and wrinkles over a series of treatments every two to four weeks. For many patients, downtime is typically minimal.
Along with a skin lightening regimen such as the Obagi Nu-Derm® System, as well as diligent use of sunblock and sun avoidance, this treatment plan can produce visible results within weeks to improve melasma.
