Photodynamic Acne Treatment

Acne is caused by many factors but often times genetics, hormones, inflammation, clogged pores, bacteria, and overactive oil production are the main contributors. Photodynamic therapy in combination with Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) is a safe and highly effective method for treating acne (whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, and nodules). It can be used as an alternative to oral medications.

Microdermabrasion of the face is followed by application of the Levulan – a clear, painless solution. Thirty to sixty minutes later, blue light is applied. Photodynamic therapy treats acne via three mechanisms:

  • Levulan inactivates bacteria that trigger acne
  • Exfoliation of the skin unclogs the pores
  • Sebaceous gland production is decreased

TREATMENT TIME:

90 minutes

RECOMMENDED FREQUENCY OF TREATMENTS:

Recommend 1-3 treatments at one month intervals.

MEDICATIONS TO AVOID PRIOR TO TREATMENT:

Please discuss with us your exact medication list – be sure to mention if you are taking any antibiotics. Please let us know if you have a condition known as porphyria (a condition that causes sensitivity to light). Photosensitizing medications should be avoided prior to treatment.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

Common to have tingling, stinging, or mild burning of the lesions during the blue light treatment. May have mild discomfort.

Avoid sunlight and intense indoor light (tanning salons, halogen task lights) for 48 hours. Skin may be red and swollen for 1-2 days. Redness, swelling, crusting/scaling also may be seen after the treatment.
