Melasma Treatment
Radiance Medical Spa offers a full range of advanced treatment options that can reduce signs of melasma and help restore your skin’s health and appearance. Melasma is a common skin condition that causes dark, patchy discoloration. It mostly occurs on the face, and frequently appears on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. The condition is more prevalent in women, especially those with darker skin tones. Melasma is triggered by hormonal changes, sun exposure, and genetics, often making it a persistent condition. Our experienced team of aesthetic professionals here at Radiance Medical Spa can evaluate your skin and develop a customized treatment plan designed to effectively address melasma and renew your appearance with beautiful results.

There are several advanced treatments that can help reduce melasma and restore a more even complexion. Options include:
Clear + Brilliant® Laser Therapy
Clear + Brilliant® is a fractional laser treatment that creates microscopic channels in the skin, promoting cell turnover and reducing pigmentation. The Clear + Brilliant® Perméa version of the platform can often be particularly suitable for patients looking for an effective option for melasma.
Fraxel® Laser Skin Resurfacing
Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing is a more intensive fractional laser that targets deeper layers of the skin to break up pigmentation and stimulate collagen remodeling. This treatment can be highly effective for stubborn melasma and can work to provide long-term improvement in skin tone and texture.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use exfoliating acids to remove damaged skin layers, helping to fade melasma and reveal brighter, more even-toned skin. Depending on the severity of melasma, light to medium-depth peels may be recommended for optimal results. Radiance Medical Spa offers a variety of advanced chemical peels that can be effective for signs of melasma.
PicoSure® FOCUS™ Lens Array
Melasma is a common skin condition affecting women during their childbearing years. The condition causes dark spots most commonly found on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Though the exact cause is unknown, there is usually a genetic predisposition for melasma, and then a trigger such as sun exposure, hormones (pregnancy or hormone therapy), and even heat that may worsen the condition.
Because the causes of melasma are not clear, we do not have a cure. However, there are treatments that should improve melasma. One of these advanced techniques for pigmentation uses the PicoSure® FOCUS™ Lens Array laser to target brown spots through a “photoacoustic” process similar to laser tattoo removal. The PicoSure® FOCUS™ Lens Array can also provide overall skin rejuvenation in texture, pores, and wrinkles over a series of treatments every two to four weeks. For many patients, downtime is typically minimal.
Along with a skin lightening regimen such as the Obagi Nu-Derm® System, as well as diligent use of sunblock and sun avoidance, this treatment plan can produce visible results within weeks to improve melasma.
Treatment Time
With numbing: 45 minutes
Recommended Frequency of Treatments
A series of treatments at an interval of 3-4 weeks. 3-10+ treatments.
Medications to Avoid Prior to Treatment
Please discuss with us your exact medication list—be sure to mention if you are taking any antibiotics. Please let us know if you have a condition known as porphyria (a condition that causes sensitivity to light). Photosensitizing medications, self tanners, and sun exposure (tanning) should be avoided prior to treatment. In addition, gentle care of your skin a few days prior and after treatment is helpful.
Possible Side Effects
Patients at our medspa describe the sensation of the treatment to be similar to the snap of a rubber band as the pulses of energy are delivered. Mild redness for 1-2 days is often experienced—this can usually be concealed with makeup. Most redness subsides within an hour of the treatment. Especially with the first treatment, you may notice that your sun damaged skin areas get darker for a few days and then begin to fade over the next month or so.
